4 Tips to Recording Professional Quality Videos With Minimal Equipment (Video Marketing For Beginners)

Video marketing can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s very easy to look and sound good without any extra tools and equipment. Twenty Over Ten, CMO Samantha Russell shares some insight.

People keep telling you that you should get started with video marketing for your business, but you have no idea where to start and you think you look absolutely foolish on camera, even if you try. Today, I’m going to share with you some insider tips on how to create great videos where you look and sound great as well even recording them right on your smartphone. I’m Samantha Russell from Twenty Over Ten, and let’s jump right in.

Tip #1: Seek Out Great Lighting

The first tip is to seek out great lighting. You want to place your smartphone or your camera where the light is coming from behind the device, so right now, I’m looking out a window and the light from the window is coming out, illuminating my face and the background. That is a really really crucial important point for recording great video is to seek out great lighting. Having overhead light or light on the side from a lamp is going to create shadows and make you not look good. So you want to find a really well-lit window, and again, you should be facing the light source and the camera should have the light source coming from behind.

Tip #2: Look At The Camera, Not At Yourself

Okay, second tip. When you are recording the video, do not look at yourself in the screen on your smartphone. But instead, look at the camera itself. This can be hard to get used to but for instance, right now, I’m not looking at myself on the screen. I’m looking at the camera on my phone. This is going to create great eye contact and make the videos so much more appealing for those who are watching it. Another tip – you want to make sure that you’re wearing pretty general colors in clothing. Don’t wear big prints or anything too noisy that will distract from the picture. The same thing with the background -you want to find a background that isn’t incredibly cluttered and will take away from the main message that you’re trying to convey.

Tip #3: Start With An Attention-Grabbing Hook

My next tip relates to getting people to watch the whole video. So most people will decide within just a few seconds whether they want to watch a video or not. Microsoft found back in 2015 that actually most people will decide within 8 seconds whether they want to continue watching the video or not. I have noticed on our own channel here at Twenty Over Ten, most videos people will watch about the first 25 to 40%. Videos that perform really well will get people to stick around on average through 60% of the video. So again having a great hook in the very beginning of your video is crucial – you can either tell a story, present a  problem as I did at the beginning of this video or share some sort of stat or number or figure that is really interesting and will make people want to continue watching.

Tip #4: Create Different Videos For Different Channels

Okay, so one final tip that I have for you is that you want to have different kinds of videos for different channels. So if you’re creating a YouTube channel, you can have longer videos there. They’ll often perform better and YouTube and the algorithm at YouTube will like it after videos not just 2 minutes long for instance. But when you’re sharing to social media, the attention spans of people that are scrolling and scanning on social media are much shorter. So there you want your videos to be anywhere between a minute to two minutes to keep people engaged in watching and you should always upload your videos that you’re sharing on social media native to the platform. So what I mean is don’t just upload a video to YouTube and then reshare the link on your LinkedIn page or your Facebook page. You want to upload the raw video file to the social media channel so that people can watch the video in the social media app and not be taken away, and that’s just going to help the algorithm on the social media platform like your content even better.
